l work with a couple of wannabe alphas  >:(

One is as stupid as the day is long & selfish.
The other is selfish & sly.
The sly one winds up the idiot and lets him loose to create trouble.
Bad news any way you look at it

They would be the first out the gate if l was given the choice.

Well Scout, the fact you're making those observations is really good.  Sorry you have to put up with it though.
If you happen to be a keen-ish reader ... check out come corporate leadership/psychology books.  It'll help you deal with 'difficult' people even if you're not in charge.

Add members where you can but in small numbers! 10% per annum is sustainable so is a one off 20% growth!

The books say that bringing in small dribs of externals into an established group makes it take longer for those externals to bond with the group and be willing to sacrifice for it.   Theoretically getting a nice big group together in one go gives everyone a better sense of 'shared history' and thus loyalty.  I will attempt to 'go large' early while I have plenty of tucker on hand to feed people and (I hope) in turn, those people will defend the viability of the farm so the tucker keeps on being produced.  If all that craps out ... I still might have 'the tower' to try again with a small cadre and build up slowly as you suggest.

I'm off to do some research to figure out how to screen people for 'loyalty and sacrifice'.  Must be a military manual or corporate management text on that topic somewhere on the web.

Try to find a military shrink if possible
