Christian preppers on the Gold Coast
« on: November 12, 2017, 01:35:10 pm »

Hi, just wondering if there are any Christian preppers out there currently around Brisbane and the Gold Coast? I am looking at purchasing on Russell or Macleay Island but am totally new to prepping.

I hope you like mozzies as you will never be rid of them on the islands
Not enough money in Australia to get me to go there again!
Or the gold coasts canal estates for that matter!

Read a few reviews that show it it doable and one can even work on the mainland and just use the ferry.  Unfortunately I am in NSW - if I ever think of taking up work in Brisbane it might be a good option.

A lot has changed in the last few years on the islands.  Both those islands are house-in-commission hubs now, brother-in-law works for dep of public works and has to go there with contractors numerous times to have the homes fixed after violent parties.  Most unemployed who live there are long time unemployed and unskilled people who moved there to beat the system.
Be careful if you intend to live there   :(

I had a sister who lived on Russell island, I visited once and she only lasted two years and the mozzies ruined her health,
So no it is not a good idea to be there!
And working on the mainland, and commuting that is crap also!

Yeah I remember that.

I have friends that live on Russell, they are retired now but worked on the big island for years with no problems. But there are a LOT of logistical issues. For example they had to store vehicles on the mainland so they could easily whip across on the passenger ferry and drive when they got there.

Everything turns into a mission, I was staying with them

My truck camped across the road from their house.

and needed a new battery, did I just drive down the road to the Battery Factory? No, it was a half-day effort on ferries.

And then one night their cat got into a fight and needed a vet. No vets on the island so they just had to wait until the next day and then, you guessed is, half a day frigging around with ferries.

If you need to use your ute to get some timber from Bunnings it's $50 for the timber and $100 (or whatever) for the ferry trip...and half a day frigging around with ferries :)

And then there's the mozzies...did anyone mention the mozzies?

if ur a christian dont buy on the islands u have mentioned. all islanders will be easilly rounded up when the pooh hits the fan. not only that 'when' the earthquake hits islands wont be a good place to be unless you wish to get to heaven quickly of course.

Oh dearie, the islands look fabulous - but for a break, not for a life.  But you must do what you think.  I'm currently in construction and at least once a week, we are contacted by people who have bought cheap blocks on Russell Island and then realise that they can't have any construction done over there or renovations or maintenance or anything as tradies charge a fortune to schlepp over there on a ferry.  So all other costs from building to groceries to services have to be tons higher.  Not really as affordable as they might think.  and yes, I'm old enough to remember the land scam with a smile.

They may eventually go like Straddie but don't know if I want to wait for that.....

I would have to agree with crazycatlady.  We’re in the mtns and it’s hard enough to get trades & builders to come up the mtn from the Coast. They charge a pretty penny too.
