Weapons act says that ammo must be stored separate to the firearm. Yair, 5 miles away could be good enough.
When mr plod came for inspection he suggested to me that it is safer to store all the ammo in our massive safe with the guns, however bolts and magazines I should store in the inner safe locked away with a separate key.  I did mentioned to him the Weapons act and he said
"Yes I know but due to high possibility of bushfires around here I consider the ammo to be safer in the fireproof safe" 
I do have to say however that our local sergeant is a really nice lad, willing to give the shirt of his back for a bottle of my home brewed schnapps ;)
