When does a bug out location evolve into a farm?
« on: January 08, 2018, 04:22:43 pm »

Hi all,

I've been looking at BOL's for ages, but every bush block I look at usually have the same list of jobs to be done...

Roads and access.
Gates and security
Water collection.
Secure buildings and storage.
Crops and livestock
Long term storage of food and supplies.

And once this is done, I have what I'd call a farm.

Am I the only one who thinks perhaps buying an abandoned farm is possibly a reasonable idea?

Perimeter security and hiding of existing infrastructure seems easier that start from a bush block and working from there.

Thoughts?

W.

Maybe it depends on what message you want to send to others. Or maybe it depends on how you envisage your BOL to be /become. All sorts of imponderables.

You may need to ask yourself some more questions on that!
A bug out location is anything from a basic campsite to a full retreat

Is it permanent, temporary or somewhere in between.
If you need to bug out from your home the same or similar reason may mean you might have to bug out from your bug out location,
What are your expectations for your bugout location

Six 4m sheets of iron and three 4m lengths of 100mm C section will provide a decent roof, fifty sandbags will provide a low bullet resistant wall and some thermal mass, another c section and a big plastic drum will get you reasonable water, rocks and clay will get you a fireplace.

Tools  a hand-drill plus screws, a spade, a small mattock and a hand-axe is about all you need
anything more is a bonus!

Just 8mm of rain will fill a 200L blue barrel so in reality with seasonal rain 2 barrels per person would be the minimum without another supply/storage. one barrel dug in in each corner will reduce the number of sandbags needed and give access from inside, with dirt embankment the water should stay reasonably cool. A little plumbing to join them and water is easy.
In the heat mozzie nets for windows and doors, in the cool something heavier like canvas

Don't put anything in that you are not prepared to leave behind if you need to.

Could create a decoy escape route to buy time to get away on the hidden one.
There are endless possible scenarios, endless possible causes / effects. Like why prepare for a tsunami if the world gets hit with a pandemic. Why prepare for a pandemic if there's a full on nuclear war.
Anything could happen creating all sorts of chaos and the ramifications that go with it.
Paranoia strikes deep.
Widespread mania could take hold.
The sky could fall in.
We can do what we can with what we've got. No more.

If it is isolated, good soil, potential for dam water and suitable building site then buy it already!!!
As long as it is affordable. 50 -100 acres is a minimum size.
If it turns into a farm even better.
As long as you can live there and survive well or not so well depending on your activity levels.
