Building a bunker from sleepers
« on: November 06, 2018, 04:06:43 pm »

Doable or not? 75mm sleepers @2 thick with dirt or concrete in between, much cheaper option?

Sleepers will last 50 years (allegedly) and a 36m square pad with walls/roof/floor would be about $25k

How would you fix them in place and make them hold together to keep the structure sound?

I'd be waterproofing a shipping container with tarry stuff like Pabco hydroseal, or pilfered road tar even better, black builders plastic on top and cover the thing with dirt and grow grass and shrubs all over. Weld awnings over and around openings and yip yah, voila, your very own Hobbit house.

Don't like the idea of sea containers, they are only strong in the corners so the walls will need to be reinforced anyway if buried

I'm thinking of painting the outer ring with liquid tar as a waterproof agent

As for wall supports whilst building, I'm not too sure. I'm no tradie by far, hence the jarrah with bagged concrete in between. Attempting to draw at least a floor plan as we speak

This is by no means a luxury setup, I'm picturing a nice little "log" cabin underground for a safe place to bunk and feed. Few bunks screwed to the walls, small pellet stove and a buried tank for waste

You can hire molds for building concrete tanks, use the strongest mesh you can get, I think it's 82. Spray it with diesel before concreting to help prevent concrete cancer.

Didn't know you could hire moulds! Very nice, more research definitely required

Collect styrofoam vege containers until you get enough for a decent size room.
Silastic them together and concrete render a few thinner layers on them.
Add some reo/mesh to the next layer of render. Build it up until you have a 4-6 inch concrete skin.
It takes time, but you can do it bit by bit. leaving a doorway of course.
Break out the foam or spray with petrol to remove styro.
Can use this system for small bunkers or larger ones depending on your needs.
Best to have a concrete base to start with and a few reo bars poking out of it. 1/2 deformed rod is fine.
Just use 86 mesh for the rest or what ever you have on hand.

Appreciate the advice, screenshotted for long term safe keeping
Planning on selling the house in the next year or two, go find some nice land somewhere quiet

There was an aussie company making styro bricks for the soul purpose of internal form setting
at one time. Interlinked like lego blocks and then were smashed out of the structure once concrete
was set/cured. I do have form work here myself and can make a 2 meter x 2 meter x 2 meter cube room with them.
Handy items.

Right this is the plan, hope it makes sense. Diagram A is one wall panel, from the top. Diagram B is half of the same panel but side view

Like I said, I'm no tradie and can't draw for nothing but Iike anyone, plans are in the head :)

Just drill the corners of the sleepers if making pig stye style so a 1 inch rod can pass through and
that will hold all the sleepers in place. With a suitable piece of rod through the whole lot of course :)

You may need extra holes depending on how you do the stacking. If you mortice each end so the corner is just the thickness of one sleeper, then one rod per corner is all you need. let me know if you do not understand ok?
Just pm me and I will phone you or find a web link to show the technique.

No worries at all, cheers man. Yeah the sleepers aren't just form work, they will be permanent. Cement is just extra protection/insulation. So where the braces are, the sleepers will be 3 thick
